Many studies have shown that amino-acids and also nucleotides (DNA bases) are preferentially taken-up into clay-particles which are in contact with solutions of them dissolved in water. This is believed to be because several water molecules are displaced from the clay-interior by each amino-acid or nucleotide molecule which is taken-in. At the level of primitive clay-cells, and made more selective by semi-permeable oxidised hydrocarbon (lipid-like) membranes, this would enforce the uptake and aggregation of such basic biological units from the primitive “blood” as it percolated through the clay-masses in which the primitive cells are contained. Thus, having achieved hydrocarbon-coated clay-cells, which then begin to co-operate, as membrane oxidation sets in and antioxidants are formed, the basic elements of life can be incorporated and assembled within them. This further evolved their co-operativity - that of molecular exchange - via the aqueous “blood”. Hence, the interactions and co-operations between different clay-masses with differing properties (according to the slightly differing cells within them), like the different organs, or other regions of higher function, are set into motion and basic animal-type function is achieved. Eventually the full-development of organic membranes (lipids) results, and the virtual animal becomes actual. Once the 3-D organic structures of cells are realised - the compartmentalising framework - life can then develop as the more complex and familiar structures of proteins and DNA are assembled and incorporated within the organic realm.
